Just before Christmas I took advantage on the offer they have on the German online store. Until January 13th, they have a 2 for 1 offer on selected products. Usually these products are – and let’s be honest here – some of their less successful ones. How I usually see it is that only on Thanksgiving time the real goodies are usually on sale (I will return to this topic on later posts). What immediately caught my eye on the Best Service sale was that all the sound libraries by Eduardo Tarilonte were included (if you are unaware about who Tarilonte is, you may visit his website ). As for myself, I noticed his name last August while reading on his latest creation Desert Winds, featuring stunningly good woodwinds such as my all-time favourite doudouk, for which I fell in love already when Peter Gabriel included the instrument on his albums. Later the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack by Bear McCreary introduced doudouk also to the world of science fiction.By the way, you don’t have to take my word on the quality since Desert Winds are included in the service enabling users to play different libraries online for free for a half an hour or so. Yes, there is about 200 ms latency at best and the installation takes a while, but still it was a major factor in my decision to go for the yuletide 2 for 1-offer.The other library I chose was also one by Eduardo Tarilonte, namely.
It is unusual to include instruments, ambient backgrounds, and even sound effects such as bird calls into one and same library, but for Tarilonte this has been the way to go. To be honest, I was interested in Forest Kingdom since it includes a marvelous rendition of Bulgarian piccolo flute as well as other woodwinds not included in Desert Winds. The fabulous legato soprano voice and 50+ pads that came with Forest Kingdom were a definite bonus.
I had tested them online and I must say that even offline they are resource-consuming, but their sound is in most cases very convincing and useful. Again, the ogre sounds and such included in Forest Kingdom were something I could easily have lived without, but all in all I spent – VAT excluded – 167 euros on two libraries rather than buying Desert Winds for 125 euros (my original plan made after trying it out) which made it all feel like a bargain. To be honest, I feel that Eduardo Tarilonte would deserve a more efficient distribution channel for his products than the current arrangement. He makes unique products, but they have to be discovered in order to be enjoyed.
I found them by accident, and I know that for many that accident is yet to happen. The fact that all his libraries can be reviewed for free online is a major plus of course. If you are a friend of ambient sounds as well as playable VST woodwinds, go and check the Tarilonte catalogue on Try-Sound.com.
